New Picture Pal activities in Maesot and at Yaung Ni Oo school

To make thing s a little easier, this year Studio Xang decided to include Picture Pal activitiees in our syllabus for our art classes in Maesot and our art classes at Yaung Ni Oo school in Mae La Oon refugee camp.

First we designed and planned 10 activities on the theme of  "Who am I?".  Please see link below for more details.

Then we practiced the activities with our volunteer teachers in Mae La Oon:

Here are some examples from each of the different tasks

1. “WE’RE GOING TO SHREWSBURY”

We designed this activity because our students, migrant or refugee cannot travel. Our project Picture Pal is an exchange between Sundorne stundents and Studio Xang students, but how could it be a little more real for our students, knowing that most of them will never be able to visit England, let alone to Shrewsbury? Well this is when are and imagination come to play. "We're going to Shrewsbury" is a collage activity where by puting themselfves into places they want to vist, our students get to travel in mind.

Shopping in the refugee camp is boring because there's not much, Let's go to England and shop in a big department store!

It looks like so much fun here, I'll take lots of photos!

There's a nice atmosphere in this country, I'm going for a walk and enjoy the view

2. SELF PORTRAIT

Here are the final pieces by volunteers in Mae La Oon. Some of our volunteers are teachers, some of them are highschool students at Yaung Ni Oo school.

Sundorne Year 10 Students trip to Shrewsbury College of Art and Technology

Sundorne Art students were given the opportunity to visit the
local art college, to sample some of the projects they would
undertake should they chose to go on to further education
                              when they leave school.

There were three different tasks on offer, this first one involved making
a 'peep box'.  Various images were cut out from magazines and
pasted inside a painted shoe box. The lid, or the end flap of the box is
then lifted to reveal the images inside.

The main workshop/classroom as you can see below was a large
spacious room that easily accommodated all the students.

The second project undertaken was to make anthropomorphic
creatures from 'junk' materials. The models were given features and
personalities by the careful selection of parts and components by
                              the students.

The selected parts were glued together to produce .'junk people' that
the students named and invented a history for.

As you can see by the finished models, they are cute creatures
that with a little bit of imagination can easily be given a history and
                               life story.

The final task was to create a three dimentional collage using images cut
                         out from magazines and newspapers.

As you can see from these two examples. they can finish up being
quite colourful, if not a bit quirky.

Our Year 8's

Here are some of our Year 8 students Picture pal work. This work is based around the idea of students introducing themselves visually to our Burmese students. They needed to think of how images could be used to give idaes about themselves and their interests:
